A video game, yes an online video game, has had recently hit more downloads than the entire population of Canada. Recently the popular battle royale game Fortnite has surpassed 40 million downloads. Being just shy of 30 million players in December, Fortnite has managed to rack up an additional 10 million players within the course of just two months. But what can be attributed to this games wild success?
Junior Kellen O’Connor had the chance to weigh in. When asked what he thought about Fortnite he claimed “It’s a really fun experience. I would even go to say that it gets addictive sometimes.” He would later go on to say that “I like that I’m able to play with my friends online, it makes the game a lot more fun”. When asked why he thought the game was so popular, he replied, “I think because the multiplayer mode is free, it’s nice that anyone can get it, and all your friends can play together and it makes the experience a lot more fun”.
Similar to Kellen, other players also feel the same way. Junior Gus Woolfrey said “It’s something that’s fun to do if you ever get bored. It’s a lot more fun if you play with your friends though”. Simply put, the game is downright addictive. It’s easy to play, and with some practice, anyone has the chance to be proficient.
The wide player base can also be credited for the games price tag. The popular battle royale mode is free to play. Simply hitting the download button will allow you access to the game. Similar to apps on your phone, despite being free, the game still offers several small in-game purchases. These small purchases are purely cosmetic, so by no means will purchasing items increase your odds to win. It’s apparent that people gravitate to the game due to the price tag, while other popular counterparts can be priced at a hefty 60 dollars. Because of this, there’s no downside of downloading the game. Furthermore, the game is easy to play with little to no skill gap. With a simple control scheme, anyone can become proficient within a couple of games.
And it’s not only the boys that are playing. Both boys and girls alike are getting in on the action. Junior Jacey Davidson claimed, “For someone new, it can be a little complicated at first, but once you learn it, it can be a lot of fun”. When asked why she thought the game was so popular she replied: “It’s probably because everyone is telling everyone to play”. It’s likely that all the games free publicity can also attribute to the vast popularity.
Overall it’s blatantly obvious that Fortnite has become wildly successful. And with this sudden success, it shows no sign of slowing down. With ongoing support from the newfound community, the game will continue to receive support from Fortnite’s development team, making the game that much better. It’s clear Fortnite has managed to shock the world going viral in a matter of weeks.
